DISCOVER: MPMG 2025 VIFF Picks

VIFF 2025 is in full swing, with an incredible lineup of must-see films on the big screen! We’ve rounded up our top picks this year for you to check out this week. Catch some exceptional films before the festival wraps on Oct 12.

Laura Murray, Founding Partner: John Candy: I Like Me

I’ve been a John Candy fan ever since I watched the hysterical road trip comedy,Trains, Planes and Automobiles. It became a film staple growing up – especially around the holidays – and I can still visualize my entire family dying with laughter at every scene. I’m really looking forward to watching director Colin Hanks’ touching and heartwarming documentary that honours Candy — the beloved Canadian icon and comic genius who left this world far too soon.

Brian Paterson, Partner: Blue Moon

As a former musical theatre performer and longtime lover of Richard Linklater films, I can’t wait to see this character study of Lorenz Hart – one of the most intriguing figures of Broadway’s Golden Age.

Angela Poon, Senior Communications Manager: Akashi

I’m a sucker for a time travel story, and This Time Tomorrow by Emma Straub is a satisfying ride. We first meet Alice, who’s taking stock of her unremarkable life on the eve of her 40th birthday. But when she magically wakes up the next morning as her 16-year-old self, we’re taken on a tender ride of self-discovery and nostalgia as she relives some of her most pivotal moments. Perhaps it’s because I read this book in my 40th year, or perhaps it’s because it’s always fun to daydream about a life in NYC even if you’re at the beach, but I found this book to be a heartfelt and hopeful meditation on appreciating all the little things that make up one’s life.

Sijia Cheng, Digital Marketing Manager: Silent Friend

Centered on a Ginkgo tree that bears witness across time, this film unfolds with meditative grace on memory, connection, and what endures.

Bronwyn Henderson, Media Relations Coordinator: Dead Lover

Start the spooky season off with something weird! Canadian indie darling Grace Glowicki directs and stars as a foul-smelling, lovelorn gravedigger who she falls for a poet enamoured by her stench. Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein gets resurrected once again with this fresh and quirky take
